What are battle ropes?

Battle ropes are really just a long piece of heavy rope. But don’t let the simplicity fool you! Battle ropes are normally 30, 40 or 50 ft in length. They are anchored halfway, effectively turning the single rope into two ropes, one in each hand (see image above).

The battling rope system was created by John Brookfield as a way to target multiple fitness components in the one workout, including mental toughness.

Benefits of battle ropes

The benefits of battle ropes are far reaching including:

  • target muscular endurance, strength, aerobic capacity and anaerobic capacity
  • full body workout (see exercise video below)
  • can be a standalone workout
  • great addition to circuit training
  • high intensity!

How to use battle ropes

Battle ropes may look easy to use considering you just hold them and start making waves. So you might no be wondering how to use battle ropes…

But the best way to use battle ropes is to actually incorporate your entire body. Now this is easier said than done. So below I’m going to give you two strategies.

1. Change direction of your hands – in addition to making waves by moving your hands up and down, try going in to out. Or out to in. Try making waves with your hands together instead of alternating. Even try rotating around your body. There are endless movement variations but you get the point.

2. Move your lower body – instead of just standing there relatively upright, try and do squats or lunges at the same time. Try moving side to side. Try doing a mixture of leg movements while battling those ropes.

Note: to increase difficulty, stand further away from the battling rope anchor. i.e. ensure there is more tension on the ropes. And the opposite to make it easier. i.e. more slack in the ropes.

You can also use battle ropes for other movements that don’t include making waves. Some examples are:

  • Battle Rope Climbs
  • Battle Rope Rows

How to set up battle ropes at home

If you are planning on using battle ropes for home workouts, you’ll need to find an area with enough space. I always recommend using battle ropes outside. But if you have an indoor area with enough space, then go for it.

Let’s say you invest in a 30 ft rope, then you’ll have 15ft left after anchoring. You’ll need to take your body length and movements into account so find an area with 20-25 ft of free space.

How to anchor battle ropes

There are many options to anchor your battle rope

  • Use the anchor strap that comes with most battle ropes.
  • Install the wall mount anchor that comes with some battle ropes.
  • Wrap your battle rope around a post or even a tree.
  • Feed the battle rope through a kettlebell handle or around a dumbbell.

Ideally you should use the battle rope anchor strap that comes with most battle ropes purchases. If it doesn’t come packaged, there will certainly be an option to add it during checkout. But the best battle ropes usually always include this.

Considerations before buying battle ropes

There are a few considerations you should make before buying a battle rope.

What size battle rope should I get?


Before buying a battle rope, you’ll need to consider length. The space you have at home will determine the length. Most battle ropes come in 30, 40 and 50 ft lengths. Remember that these lengths will be halved after anchoring the battle rope halfway. Also remember to take your movements and body into account. So if it’s a 30 ft rope you’re investing in, I would make sure you have at least 20-25 ft of space before buying.

Note that longer ropes provide a slightly better workout but will be more expensive.


The battle rope thickness will largely depend on your hand size and current grip strength. If you buy a rope that’s too thick, your relatively weak grip strength or small hands will make your workout suck. i.e. your grip strength will give out before you’ve even had a good workout.

Also, the thicker your battle rope, the heavier it will be. Most battle ropes come in 1.5, 2 and 2.5 inch thicknesses. If you’re not sure what to get, I’d recommend going for the 1.5 inch option.


The material of your battle rope is actually very important. There are three main materials that battle ropes come in.

  1. 100% Dacron
  2. Poly Dacron
  3. Manila

The best battle ropes are 100% Dacron in my opinion. Poly Dacron is a close second!


The above materials are used for the rope strands. Dacron is the heaviest and most expensive part providing the strength of your rope. Polypropylene when used gives your battle rope a lightweight core, which reduces the overall costs while maintaining strength. Both the Dacron and Polypropylene are used to make synthetic strands.

Manila is a natural alternative but isn’t as durable. i.e. the rope strands tend to fray over time and leave white fibers on the ground after each workout. This might be ok outside but definitely not if you plan to use battle ropes inside.

I believe the best material is 100% dacron considering it’s the strongest, most durable and heaviest for a more intense workout. For those on a budget, I recommend going for the Poly Dacron alternatives.

However it’s worth mentioning that manila feels a lot better in your hands. So if you plan on using your battle rope for other movements like pull ups and climbs then it is worth considering.

My next recommendation is the Titan Fitness Battle Rope. Considering how well known the brand is it’s surprisingly cheap! This battle rope is made from Poly Dacron material so it’s going to be durable but slightly lighter than the Power Guidance Battle Rope. A great option for those on a budget looking to incorporate indoor or outdoor battle rope training.

So I definitely recommend the Power Guidance Battle Rope. This battling rope ticks all the boxes in my opinion. And it doesn’t break the bank!
